The stamp is a legal monopoly. A licensed architect must sign drawings for most buildings, and personal liability attaches to that signature. No advance in capability transfers liability to software, because liability is a legal construct rather than a technical one.

That protection is real, and like accounting's CPA pathway, architecture's licensure does something extra: it mandates logged experience hours under a licensed practitioner. Firms must employ and supervise candidates for the profession to replenish itself. That props the on-ramp open, which is why architecture rates 4.5 on entry-path erosion rather than the 8.0 we give graphic design.

But here is the question nobody in the profession has properly answered.

The logged hours exist. What happens inside them has changed. A candidate who spends those years directing generative tools and reviewing output is accumulating the same hours as one who spent them drawing by hand — but are they building the same judgment?

Licensure certifies that someone has done the time. It assumes the time teaches. If the content of those years shifts from producing work to supervising work, the assumption may quietly stop holding, and the license would continue certifying something it no longer measures.

This is the sharpest version of a problem that runs through this entire index. In nursing, medicine and the trades, mandated experience hours are hands-on by necessity — you cannot supervise your way through clinical hours or an apprenticeship. In architecture, accounting and engineering, the mandated hours are desk-based, and desk work is exactly what is changing.

We rate the protection 8.5 because it is currently doing its job. We flag it as the factor most likely to be quietly hollowed out from the inside rather than repealed.


Which architecture careers are safest from AI?

  1. Construction administration / site — 4.7. Physical, unpredictable, and impossible to do remotely.
  2. Licensed architect / design lead — 5.0. The stamp, the client, and design accountability.
  3. Specialist practice — 5.5. Sustainability, building science and computational design — directing the tools rather than competing with them.
  4. Technical / BIM coordination — 6.7. Valuable and increasingly automated.
  5. Production drafting — 7.6. The traditional entry point, and the fastest-moving track.

Is an architecture degree still worth it in 2026?

Two honest cautions, and only one is about AI.

The first is the length and the destination. Architecture is a long degree followed by logged experience and licensure exams. Only the licensed end captures the protection our scoring identifies. As with psychology and medicine, commitment to the full path is the real question rather than the subject itself.

The second has nothing to do with technology. Architecture's pay and hours problems substantially predate AI. The profession has long been demanding, competitive, and modestly compensated relative to the training required. Our index measures automation exposure, not whether a field is a comfortable living, and a family should weigh both separately.

The versions of the degree that hold up: programs with integrated practice experience, genuine technical depth in building science or computational design, and studio emphasis on design judgment rather than production skill.

Adjacent paths worth a look for the spatially-minded: construction management, which is physical, accountable and chronically understaffed, and urban planning, which is regulatory and judgment-heavy.

Not licensed ones. Generative systems can produce a thousand options; they cannot sign for one, visit the site, or carry liability when a building fails.

What architecture jobs are safest from AI?

Is architecture safer than engineering?
Slightly less so — licensed architecture 5.0 against licensed engineering 4.0. Engineering carries more physical site work and a stronger catastrophic-failure accountability structure.
Should my child study architecture or construction management?
Construction management scores better on exposure and is chronically short of people. Architecture offers design work that construction management does not. The choice is about what they actually want to do all day.
