Pharmacy has as complete a regulatory moat as anything in this index. Dispensing is restricted by law, pharmacists are registered, scope of practice is defined in statute, and errors carry professional and legal consequence. On this factor pharmacy rates 9.5 — higher than nursing, higher than teaching, level with medicine.

And yet it scores 4.9, while nursing scores 2.8.

That gap is the most instructive thing in this profile, and it teaches something the other licensed professions cannot.

Licensing determines who may perform an activity. It says nothing about how automatable that activity is.

Nursing's license reserves physical assessment, hands-on care and clinical judgment at a bedside — work that is inherently hard to automate, so the license and the difficulty point the same way. Pharmacy's license reserves verification, dispensing accuracy and the application of pharmacological rules to a prescription — work that is inherently easy to automate, so the license is protecting an activity that a machine could otherwise do well.

The result is a profession where the human is legally required and increasingly supervisory. That is genuine protection — nobody can dispense without a pharmacist — but it is protection of a role whose content is thinning, rather than protection of work that needed a human anyway.

Watch what follows from this. Pharmacy is expanding clinical services in many health systems: vaccination, prescribing authority, medication review, chronic disease management. That is not accidental. It is a profession deliberately migrating toward the parts of its scope that are hard to automate, and away from the parts that are not.

The general lesson: a license is only as protective as the work it reserves. Ask what activity the law actually requires a human for, and then ask separately whether a machine could do that activity well. Those are different questions, and only asking the first one will mislead you.

  4. Industry / regulatory — 5.8. Documentation-heavy, though regulatory accountability holds some ground.
  5. Dispensing-focused roles — 6.4. The most exposed part of the profession.

Is a pharmacy degree still worth it in 2026?

Yes, and the direction of travel within the profession matters more than the headline number.

The clinical end of pharmacy is expanding — prescribing rights, medication review, vaccination, chronic disease management — and those are the parts that score best. A student who trains toward clinical practice is entering a profession that is actively reshaping itself in the right direction.

The honest cautions have little to do with AI. Community practice carries genuine retail and commercial pressure. A substantial share of the day is dispensing rather than the clinical work people trained for, and the profession has been debating that tension for years. Training is four to five years plus registration.

Worth asking any program: how much of the curriculum is clinical practice versus dispensing science, and what proportion of graduates enter hospital or specialist roles?
